Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure MCQs for NEET
Chemical bonding decides how you answer half of inorganic and organic chemistry, so it is worth more than the two or three direct questions it gives. Try these questions, read the reason for each answer, then take a full 10-question test on the chapter in the app.

Quick NCERT recap
- VSEPR: lone pairs repel more than bond pairs, so lone pairs squeeze the bond angles smaller.
- Hybridisation from steric number: 2 → sp (linear), 3 → sp² (trigonal planar), 4 → sp³ (tetrahedral), 5 → sp³d, 6 → sp³d².
- Bond order (MOT) = (Nb − Na)/2; higher bond order means shorter and stronger bonds.
- O₂ is paramagnetic because of two unpaired electrons in π* orbitals — a favourite NEET question.
- Fajans' rules: a small, highly charged cation with a large anion gives more covalent character.
- Hydrogen bonding explains the high boiling point of H₂O, HF and NH₃ compared with their group members.
Exam tips for this chapter
- Count the steric number (sigma bonds + lone pairs) before naming shape or hybridisation — never guess from the formula.
- Learn the bond-angle order NH₃ (107°) > H₂O (104.5°) and the reason: number of lone pairs.
- Memorise the MOT diagram order change after N₂ — it is the source of most bond-order mistakes.
- For dipole moment questions, check symmetry first: symmetric molecules like CO₂, BF₃, CCl₄ have zero net dipole.
Common questions
How many NEET questions come from chemical bonding?
Typically two to three every year, mostly on shape, hybridisation, bond order and dipole moment.
Is NCERT enough for this chapter?
Yes, if you also practise questions. Almost every asked fact is an NCERT line, but you need repetition to recall it in 60 seconds.
Where can I take a full test on this chapter?
