- Ohm's law: V = IR, valid only for ohmic conductors at constant temperature.
- Resistance R = ρL/A; resistivity ρ depends on the material and temperature, not on the shape.
- Series: R = R1 + R2 + …; parallel: 1/R = 1/R1 + 1/R2 + …
- Drift velocity v_d = I/(nAe) and is only a fraction of a millimetre per second.
- Terminal voltage of a cell V = EMF − I·r, so V equals the EMF only when no current is drawn.
- Wheatstone bridge is balanced when P/Q = R/S, and then no current flows through the galvanometer.
Exam tips for this chapter
- Redraw messy circuits as a clean series–parallel diagram before calculating anything.
- Check for a balanced Wheatstone bridge first — it often removes one resistor from the calculation entirely.
- Remember that a potentiometer measures EMF without drawing current, which is why it beats a voltmeter.
- Power questions repeat often: use P = V²/R for a fixed voltage supply and P = I²R for a fixed current.
