  • Newton's first law defines inertia: a body keeps its state of rest or uniform motion unless a net external force acts.
  • Second law: F = dp/dt, and for constant mass F = ma. Force and acceleration are always in the same direction.
  • Third law: action and reaction are equal, opposite, and act on two different bodies — they never cancel each other.
  • Friction: f_static(max) = μs·N and f_kinetic = μk·N, with μk slightly less than μs.
  • For a body on a banked road of angle θ, the safe speed without friction is v = √(r·g·tanθ).
  • In a lift accelerating upward with a, apparent weight = m(g + a); in free fall it is zero.

Exam tips for this chapter

  • Draw the free-body diagram first, every single time — most wrong answers come from a missing force, not from bad algebra.
  • Resolve along and perpendicular to the incline, not along x and y, when a slope is involved.
  • Check whether the body is about to slip or already sliding before choosing μs or μk.
  • NEET repeats connected-block and pulley questions; practise them until the constraint relation is automatic.

Common questions

How many questions come from Laws of Motion in NEET?

Usually one to two direct questions, but the ideas are used again in work-energy, circular motion and rotational mechanics, so the real weight is much higher.

Do I need to memorise formulas for this chapter?

Very few. F = ma, f = μN and v = √(rg·tanθ) cover most questions. The rest is drawing the correct free-body diagram.
